Six and out!
A scratch six skippered by The Sherwinator looked down and out after batting first against holders Bishopston in the annual Shire Sixes cup tournament on Tuesday.

Rich Williams was the only batsman at ease as wickets fell without runs being scored, to leave F& P having to defend just 29 in their 5 overs.

But the bowlers came up trumps with Matt Hildrew, Rich Williams, Sid Mistry and Charlie Walker astonishingly restricting Bishopston's scoring to take the match to the last over, when despite Dave Sherwin's best efforts the holders could not be held.

Timsbury triumph in last over nailbiter
In a match of fluctuating fortunes Timsbury just emerged victorious in this National Village 2nd round cup classic.

Electing to bat first the visitors lost wickets at regular intervals. Opener Pippett went well for 45 but only late order resistance from Passingham 49 and Brinksworth 30* ensured a respectable score was reached. George Humphreys 2/25, Ed Humphreys 2/34, Paul Nice 2/35 and Charlie Walker 2/46 all bowled well and were backed up by good fielding and catching.

In reply, following a brisk opening stand between Charlie Walker and Simon Bachelor, the Timsbury bowlers found their lengths and scoring became ever more difficult. Left arm spin and swing began to turn the match in Timsbury's favour as the F&P batsmen attempted to force the pace. Wickets fell at regular intervals with none of batsmen 2 to 5 adding the weight of runs needed.

When Simon Bachelor was out for a hard working 65, F&P were in trouble. Batsmen 6 and 7 were under pressure to hit boundaries but tight bowling kept them under the cosh.

50 were required from the last 5 overs when part time number 8 Mark Walker came to the crease for his first bat of the season. After smashing 29 runs from 10 balls (incl 4x6s) the match had been swung back in F&P's favour.

Just 7 runs were now needed from 7 balls.

Alas the next ball hit Mark's bat 1/8 inch too high and instead of the intended 6 into the next field the ball went into orbit and was well caught by a very relieved bowler.

Paul Nice came in and skied a single.

6 needed from 5 balls. Surely Failand were there!

George Humphreys gave it the long handle and it looked that he had hit the winning 6. But there was despair for Failand as a top quality catch was taken on the boundary, sending the visiting supporters into raptures.

Even then, 6 from 4 balls was not impossible and Paul Nice again set his sights on the far field. But it was not to be. Paul perished and Mark Day was left last man standing.

So for the third time in recent years F&P had been narrowly beaten by Timsbury at this stage of the cup.

Maybe next year!

Walker the star with a century
Failand & Portbury are through to the NPower National Village Knock-out Cup third round after 15-year old Charlie Walker hit his maiden century in their five-wicket win over Ashbrittle, Stawley & Clayhanger.

After being put into bat, the visitors struggled early on against the accuracy of the Failand attack. Only some late-order hitting ensured that a respectable 165-8 was reached. George Humphreys was the pick of the attack and finished with 3-28.

Failand were in real trouble at 15-3 when Walker came to the crease. Good support was provided by Jeff Astle (9), Dave Sherwin (21) and Ed Humphreys (21*). With the run rate creeping up to 8 an over with 5 overs to go, Walker dispatched 20 off 6 balls with some magnificent strokes. E. Humphreys hit the winning runs in the penultimate over, with Walker carrying his bat for 103*, including 13 fours and 3 sixes.

CLEVEDON HAMMERED
F & P marched on into the last 8 of the Bristol & District Cup, administering a comprehensive hammering to Clevedon (3 leagues higher) as the visitors' season went from bad to worse.

Clevedon batted first at Horse Race Lane on a belter but some outstanding ground fielding and catching, with all the bowlers doing their bit, kept the visitors under control until the last couple of overs, when the score accelerated to finish on 171 for 8 from the allotted 20 overs. Tony Lippe, Hugo Hanchet and Nadeem Ahmed were all among the wickets.

F & P in reply lost Andrew Trineman early but John Bachelor 104* and Ed Humphreys 56* powered on with a stand of 146* to win in just the 18th over.

Quarter final opponents are Knowle at home - bring 'em on!

EPIC CUP CLASH DUE ON SUNDAY
The 1st XI go into what promises to be a titanic struggle with Timsbury (A) on Sunday in the semi-final of the Somerset area of the National Village Competition with a string of 3 successive victories (league and cup) behind them.

BISHOPSTON LASHED IN BRISTOL & DISTRICT CUP
No quarter was given to the visitors (who play in the league above) in this second round cup match at Horse Race Lane. Batting first Bishopston could only achieve a low score as they were swept away by Fiery Lippe and the spin of Humungous Hanchet, with Ijaz administering 2 stumpings to the hapless batsmen.

Prime-form F & P openers John Bachelor and skipper Andy Trineman blasted off the required runs without loss. Scores:

Bishopston - 129 all out from 19.5 overs (H Hanchet 5-24, T Lippe & Nadeem 2 wkts each)

F & P - 132 - 0 from 15 overs (J Bachelor 71*, A Trineman 44*)

F & P march on to the next round by 10 wickets.
Somerset cup: Whitchurch Whipping
F & P cruised past Whitchurch in the second round clash (away) to forge on in this competition under midweek Skipper Andy Trineman. Scores:

Whitchurch - 26 all out (Tony Lippe 4 wkts, Paul Nice 3 wkts)

F & P 27-3

Failand won by 7 wickets.

Next round opponents on Wednesday 15th June are Frampton Cotterell or Temple Cloud at home.

F & P MARCH UP THE HILL!
The Second Round of the National Village competition proved just as much a fiasco as the First Round. Agian there was no game as Uphill Castle were removed from the tournament by the organisers on the ground that Uphill is not in reality a proper village or they field 4 teams on a Saturday or they pay one of their players, depending on which version of events turns out to be right.

So another blank Sunday for the F & P players who are champing at the bit to actually play. The consolation is that we are still in the competition but next year it must make sense to review whether or not entry is worthwhile.

NATIONAL VILLAGE CUP
Sunday 29th May sees F & P take on Uphill Castle at 2.00 pm at home in the rearranged 2nd round of the cup. Last year saw the highlight of the season down at Uphill - a local streaker being jumped on by the F & P players!

BRISTOL & DISTRICT CUP RESULT
Alveston were Blasted out of the Cup (first round) at Horse Race Lane on 11th May as simply as ABC. Nadeem's 4-27 backed up by Tony Lippe 2-18 ensured that the visitors could only reach 109 all out in their 20 overs.

F & P overhauled the target for the loss of a single wicket in the 13th over led by a 57* by Simon Bachelor, backed up by Andrew Trineman 25 and Henry Humphreys 15*.

New safety guidance on the wearing of cricket helmets by young players

The England and Wales Cricket Board has issued new safety guidance on the wearing of cricket helmets by young players. It is recommended that a helmet is worn by young players when batting and when standing up to the stumps when keeping wicket against a hard cricket ball in matches and in practice. A young player should not be allowed to bat or to stand up to the stumps when keeping wicket without a helmet against a hard ball except with written parental consent. Coaches, teachers, managers and umpires should always ensure that a young player wears a helmet if this written parental consent has not been received. Players should regard a helmet with a faceguard as a normal item of protective equipment when batting against a hard ball, together with pads, gloves and, for boys, an abdominal protector (box). There is a British Standard (BS7928:1998) for cricket helmets and it is in the best interests of players to ensure that their helmet confirms to this standard.

The ECB is recommending that this guidance is followed by all players up to the age of 18. It applies to young players in adult cricket as well as to all junior cricket played with a hard cricket ball.

The ECB is requesting that the new guidance is communicated to the parents or guardians of all young players through clubs and schools, and that parental consent is always obtained before young players are allowed to bat or stand up to the stumps when keeping wicket against a hard ball without wearing a helmet.
